Kalimuendo Scores as Nottingham Forest Claim Nostalgic Victory Against Malmö

“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” was chanted around the City Ground as Forest followers reveled in another win against their Swedish opponents. Much has happened since Trevor Francis’s decisive header clinched the European Cup back in 1979, but the club still hold dear those memories. Similarly, major changes have taken place in the five weeks since Sean Dyche took charge, with the team appearing refreshed and earning a comfortable win courtesy of goals from Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their hopes of progressing in the European competition.

Building Steam with Third Consecutive Win

For Forest, this result – against a Swedish side that had been inactive for almost three weeks after finishing in sixth place in their home competition – represented a third straight triumph across all competitions and further built on the momentum gained from last weekend’s stunning victory at Anfield. While this fixture was a reminder of Forest’s historic success in name, the game itself was devoid of any significant jeopardy or nerves.

It proved to be an occasion dripping in nostalgia, an longed-for reunion and the third competitive clash between the teams since the European Cup final 46 years ago.

The home side fully embraced the history, paying tribute to the heroes of that era by providing them, along with their Malmö counterparts, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Swedish club’s squad from that time were additionally present. The two clubs shared a dinner together before the kick-off. Forest legends and their teammates received a rousing reception when they gathered on the field 15 minutes before kick-off, and a typically superb tifo was unveiled in the Trent End.

Recalling History

“30th May 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left,” displayed half of a large banner, in block capitals. While no one required a reminder of what ensued, the rest was revealed as the squads emerged from the dressing rooms. “There is Francis,” it stated. A second stunning tifo depicted Brian Clough observing proceedings beside his assistant Taylor on a bench at the Munich stadium.

Control from the Outset

So, Forest had drunk in those beautiful memories, but what about the showing on the night? It was pretty good, as well. They were in complete control from the moment the forward fired an effort off target inside two minutes and built a two-goal lead by the break. Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Zach Abbott, on his maiden European start, tried his luck.

It seemed appropriate that Yates, who came to the club aged eight, made the first dent in the Malmö defense led by their own homegrown captain, Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford. The Forest centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a opponent and into the pathway of the midfielder, who finished right-footed from the edge of the penalty area to score his maiden strike since March.

Second Strike Seals Control

Yates was involved in the team's second goal on the verge of half-time, too, his free header parried by Malmö’s shot-stopper Ellborg but the alert forward poised to tap in the loose ball from close range. James McAtee, the midfielder handed a seldom start and just his second outing since the autumn, was the spark, chipping a perfect ball towards his teammate at the far post.

A minute earlier, Hudson-Odoi’s low effort was turned aside off Malmö defender Rösler, the son of ex- Man City forward Uwe Rösler, and an unmarked Milenkovic had previously had a powerful header smartly saved by the keeper, who was back in place of the former Aston Villa goalie Robin Olsen.

Malmö’s Difficulties

This was the Swedish side's first match since the Swedish Allsvenskan ended on November 9th, and they found it hard to equal the home team's energy. The Reds extended the lead to three when Milenkovic scored after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a set-piece. The captain had a volley blocked, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic pounced on the rebound.

Forest then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi chipping a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Sangaré sent an optimistic shot off target from distance. It was one of those evenings. Dyche, mindful of Sunday’s domestic fixture here against Brighton, made multiple alterations from the team that surprised the Reds at their ground last weekend, when they also netted three goals, though he introduced substitutes and further fresh legs midway through the final period.

Smooth Night for the Team

It proved a flawless night for Nottingham Forest. The coach could withdraw the defender with the game already boxed off and subsequently brought on teenage full-back Sinclair for his first-team debut. He discussed the club legends providing “valuable insights” at regular meetings and, nearly fifty years on, the current crop showed they are able of producing of thrills, as well.
