Whenhe debut appearance the Spanish forward played in the UK, an teenage appearing for the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at the English ground in the 2015 season, he scored. The second time he appeared in British turf, against the English side following that, he scored. His third outing, against the Citizens six weeks after that, well, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the northwest to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in the 2017 season, he scored again. A spectacular strike, too. “Truly,” he states, “it’s a top-class goal in my career.” Therefore the team did their duty: he was replaced.
“I became very upset,” the attacker admits, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the latter period: I hadn’t yet signed deal, goals were flowing, many stories circulated, as you’d expect. I don’t know about interest from Newcastle, but I came across reports about Man United, the usual talk. I’m not certain the validity, but had they contacted me, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. It’s a privilege.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At Lezama, the city, the morning session is set to begin; post-session, the quick travel to the airport and another trip to England, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the European elite competition on the upcoming match. Uttering the name lights him up. This is proving a challenging campaign for Athletic, partially owing to the requirements of being here. Losing in stoppage time in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their past eight league games and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in European competition. However, look at the overall situation, the major occasions he’s experienced and those that lie ahead, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation from him.
In the three years since he had returned to the club, Gorka has been a Europa League semi-finalist, stopped at the gates a final at home by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway surrounded by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in a long wait. Now he is the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are distinctive and making their first appearance in a long period. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.
He considered it challenging enough just to earn a spot and his assessment was correct. Born to the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a dedicated fan at the team he now opposes, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that produced the coach, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after his first-team bow in that summer, he went through a ACL injury, dropped, a drop in category and a return before he could truly get a chance, making his comeback to live the best days of the club’s history.
“Entering the youth system thinking you won’t reach the top level but with every stage you progress through you’re still there and you can notice the proximity. You arrive and then … you have to leave.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his debut and that period. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances at that level and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A severe disappointment but I look back on it as a beneficial experience because it shifted the outlook. The rehabilitation process is hard, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I would go to training and then return home, typical youth behavior. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so do everything. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. With hip imbalance, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, make it a 12 or a 14. Every small aspect: do them.
“In the first team you’re going to face physical challenges who have been in battles countless occasions. Extremely powerful. Reviewing old images: my legs are chicken legs. So what happens, happens. Look at pictures of me now and the change is dramatic. Injury made me see that. Sessions end, but additional work remains. Teammates are set, really ready; no exceptions.”
Minutes are crucial. Guruzeta departed in tears in that year, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he netted three goals in numerous matches. With Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “Many experience this: temporary moves, ended deals. If you turn it round, effort, faith, and when eventually they need someone for your role, recall is possible. Readiness is vital. Upon the recall, an aspiration fulfilled. The trophy success, play in Europe, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
No wonder he says appreciate the experience. Especially after the previous season which, at times, was involved suffering. Previously the main threat with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
