The domestic and foreign initiatives β from the attempted coup in the past to recent incursions and threats β erode both domestic and international jurisprudence. But thatβs not all.
They endanger the core idea of a civilized world.
A guiding principle of a functioning society is to forestall the stronger from preying upon and using the vulnerable. Without this, we could find ourselves permanently immersed in a brutish war where only the fittest prevails.
This principle is central of the nation's founding texts. This is also the foundation of the postwar international order championed by the United States, emphasizing multilateralism, popular sovereignty, human rights, and the supremacy of law.
However, it is a delicate principle, frequently ignored by those who choose to misuse their power. Preserving it requires that the influential have enough integrity to abstain from seeking immediate gains, and that the public demand responsibility if they don't.
Unfettered might does not equal right. It results in instability, upheaval, and war.
Whenever individuals, companies, or nations that are richer and more powerful attack and exploit those that are less so, the framework of society weakens. If such aggression are left unchecked, the system fails. Without intervention, the world can plunge into disorder and conflict. It has happened before.
Our current reality is a society and world grown vastly more unequal. Political and economic power are held by fewer hands than in modern history. This invites the elite to leverage their position against the less fortunate because they act with a sense of untouchable.
The wealth of certain ultra-wealthy individuals is staggering. The reach of big tech, big oil, and large defense contractors extends over a vast portion of the world. AI is poised to centralize wealth and power even more. The military might of the world's largest nations is unmatched in recorded history.
Enabled by complicit legislators and a sympathetic judicial body, the executive office has been turned into the most powerful and unaccountable instrument of government in history.
Consider this confluence and you perceive the danger.
A clear connection ties previous transgressions to present-day threats. Both were based on the hubris of invincibility.
There is parallel dynamics in other global contexts: in military conflicts, in expansive ambitions, and in the rampant monopolization by massive conglomerates.
However, raw power does not establish right. It fosters uncertainty, revolution, and bloodshed.
History shows that rules and conventions to constrain the powerful also safeguard them. Absent these limits, their relentless pursuit for increased control and resources in time bring them down β and with them their corporations, nations, or empires. And pave the way for global conflict.
Such lawlessness will plague international stability β and indeed a rules-based order β for the foreseeable future.
